Expert summary
Levi Strauss & Co. is a world famous clothing company known best for its brand of denim jeans. It was formed in 1853 when its founder, Levi Strauss, moved from Germany to San Francisco to open a dry goods business. The company began producing denim overalls in the 1870s, but they did not produce the modern jeans which they are most famous for until the 1920s. The company experienced a boom in business during the 60s and 70s due to the popularity of the casual denim look. During this time manufacturing capacity grew from 16 plants to more than 63 plants nationwide. Levi's struggled financially during the turn of the 21st century but became profitable again in 2007.
